The Biggest Mistake Was Dreaming of Being an Entrepreneur
This is the story of Abhi. From a young age, he had a deep love for food. But unlike others who would ask their mothers for various dishes, Abhi tried to create them himself! While his friends were excited about sports news and stories, Abhi found joy in anything related to cooking. He dreamed of one day captivating people with the food he made.
The best thing about Abhi was that even with this dream, he never neglected his studies. He completed his BBA and was now pursuing an MBA in Human Resources Management. But as his studies neared their end, Abhi realized that his mind was consumed only with thoughts of cooking! While everyone else was preparing for jobs, Abhi couldn't. He simply couldn't! All his thoughts revolved around his dream business: what dishes to put on the menu, how to prepare the food, how to design the interior, and how to offer customers a unique experience.
Until now, his family hadn't said much, but as news of various people getting jobs started circulating, Abhi's guardians also began to make subtle, probing remarks. Abhi understood that no one understood his dream, but he also decided that he wouldn't walk the same path as everyone else.
He created a page on Facebook to showcase the dishes he had been experimenting with for a long time. What happened next was beyond anything Abhi had ever imagined. His father was the first to react: "So, my son has become a chef? I have no way to show my face in society anymore!" Then his mother said, "Everyone's sons dream of working for international companies, earning hundreds of thousands every month, and my son dreams of taking over my kitchen!"
Suddenly, Abhi felt that people in this world are incredibly alone. Family is a source of support, but the people who have lived under the same roof for generations often don't know, and perhaps don't even want to know, what's in your heart! Every day, at least one relative or neighbor would tell him how big a mistake he had made, how he had shattered his parents' dreams and brought shame upon them in society! Abhi had many answers, but he remained silent, though he remembered everything.
Time passed, and Abhi was less affected by the taunts from those around him than he was by the behavior of his own siblings and parents. After finishing his home delivery work, he often came home to an empty table and went to sleep with just a glass of water, not saying a word out of hurt.
The only thing that made him happy was the feedback and love he received from his customers. Every customer was a blessing for Abhi. He was reintroducing the forgotten dishes from various districts of Bangladesh to the busy lives of people. Each customer, after placing their first order, would return with even larger orders. Initially, Abhi kept the prices low, but gradually he couldn't keep up. As his workload increased, he struggled. When he raised the prices, his customers didn't complain. Now, Abhi had only one plan: to hire two people and transition his business operations to a different location.
With the money he was earning, he didn't spend it on himself. He was thinking of buying two trendy smartphones for his parents. He didn't fulfill any of his own desires. But one day, all his plans changed. He came home to find his mother gone. His younger siblings started talking very rudely, saying that their mother had gone to their village and would only return when Abhi quit his "chef" job and got a "good" one!
The news was devastating for Abhi. That very night, he decided to kill his dream. He couldn't bear the silent suffering and neglect of those he lived with and for any longer. Abhi deleted all the photos, posts, and wonderful reviews from his Facebook page. He didn't shed a single tear; he felt nothing. A great stubbornness took hold of him. He would now live only for his family, but he vowed to never speak his mind to anyone again. He would earn a lot of money and give it all to his family, but he would never share his feelings with anyone.
Abhi was a good student, so within three weeks, he got a "good job." The salary was quite good. Wherever he went, people still made snide remarks, followed by superficial praise. Abhi remained silent, as before. Everyone at home was happy. This is what he wanted, wasn't it? Abhi's contribution to all the household expenses was now the highest. His parents and siblings now spoke of Abhi with pride. But what about Abhi?
Every night before going to sleep, his eyes would get wet. He probably knew why, but he wouldn't let himself dwell on it. In his dreams, he would see the cheerful Abhi of the past, but in the morning, on his way to the office, he wouldn't think about those dreams anymore. The anger in his heart kept repeating one thing: "Dreaming was the biggest mistake of my life." This society and his family, instead of encouraging his entrepreneurial spirit, discouraged and insulted him at every turn. What was a source of joy for Abhi was an eyesore for everyone else. Now, Abhi had no opportunity to showcase his creativity, no way to bring joy to people with his talent, no way to introduce the traditions of Bangladesh. In exchange for all this, there was only emptiness and silent tears, which no one understood.
Although this is Abhi's story, many of us can probably relate to him, can't we?
